This project began with a simple idea: to see On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (the 1970 Barbra Streisand film and my favorite movie) reimagined as a Studio Ghibli–style animation. In parallel, I created a new dance mix around Barbra’s unforgettable line “My name is Melinda”, layered over the Super Eurobeat instrumental Heavensent by Ace.
I asked ChatGPT to reinterpret stills from the film in the Ghibli style, then curated and sequenced the results into a rapid, dreamlike retelling. Merging the remix with the generated imagery, I shaped the project into a condensed journey through the film’s story.
I understand AI in art is complicated. I share the unease, but I also see its potential when used as a tool rather than a substitute. Bringing this project together meant curating images, producing and editing the audio, and spending countless hours shaping it into something cohesive. It’s both tribute and experiment. And while Studio Ghibli, Super Eurobeat, and Japanese culture more broadly carry immense cultural weight, my goal is not imitation, but celebration. Celebration of the artistry that has shaped our collective imagination.
